The short course in Cardiorespiratory Practice offers an opportunity for UK registered health care professionals to develop and broaden their existing knowledge and skills. You will be encouraged to engage in self development that assists you to meet your individual educational and clinical needs.
The course comprises four single modules:
- Module U47172 Introduction to Patient Assessment
- Module U47179 Adult Care of the Acutely Ill or Deteriorating Patient OR Module U47178 Adult Cardiorespiratory Intensive Care
- Module U47176 Cardiac Nursing Care
- Module U47177 Respiratory Nursing Care

This module provides the opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and understanding of assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care relevant to acutely ill or deteriorating patients within the area of acute care. The module assessment comprises: A short answer classroom test, clinical competencies and practice hours. |

This practice module will provide the opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and understanding of assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care relevant to critically ill patients with haemodynamic and respiratory compromise. The module assessment comprises: A classroom test, clinical competencies and practice hours. |

This module will provide practitioners with the ability to develop knowledge and skills in patient assessment, giving the opportunity to examine & explore common themes and concepts underpinning the speciality of critical and specialist care. The module assessment comprises: An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), clinical competencies, and practice hours. |

This module will provide practitioners with the ability to develop knowledge and skills in adult respiratory nursing care. The module will give the opportunity to examine and explore the physiological, psychological and social needs of clients with altered respiratory pathophysiology. Analysis of acute, chronic and palliative interventions will offer a diverse exploration of the medical and surgical management of this client group. The module assessment comprises: An essay, clinical competencies and practice hours. |

This module will provide practitioners with the ability to develop knowledge and skills in adult cardiac nursing care. The module will give the opportunity to examine and explore the physiological, psychological and social needs of the cardiac patient. Analysis of acute, chronic and palliative interventions will offer a diverse exploration of the medical and surgical management of this client group. An insight will be given into the specialist role of the cardiac practitioner in light of the political and social context of health policy development. The module assessment comprises: A poster presentation, clinical competencies and practice hours. |
The Cardiorespiratory short course may be taken over a year. Most short course teaching days are on Wednesdays throughout the semester. There is also the option of studying over two years to complete the course, subject to your Manager’s approval. For the two-year route the Introduction to Patient Assessment and Respiratory Nursing Care modules are taken in the first year with either Adult Care of the Acutely Ill or Deteriorating Patient or Adult Cardiorespiratory Intensive Care Practice, and Cardiac Nursing Care modules in the second year of study.

Access to the Critical and Specialist Care short courses is open to practitioners who meet the following criteria. You must:
- Be a UK registered health or social care professional with a minimum of 12 months' professional practice
- Have the support of the manager of your practice area.
- Be able to produce evidence of the ability to study at your proposed level of entry if requested
- Be successful in the selection process for this module/course (interview or other)
- Be employed or have access to a health care setting that will enable achievement of the learning outcomes.
