The Children's High Dependency Practice short course offers an opportunity for UK registered health care professionals to develop and broaden their knowledge and skills. You will be encouraged to engage in self development that will assist you to meet your individual educational and clinical needs.

- Module U47192 Principles and Practice of Children's High Dependency Care (double module)
Successful completion of this course allows you to exit with the short course award in Children's High Dependency Practice, worth 45 CATS Credits at Level 6.
The Children's High Dependency Practice short course may be taken over a year. There is also the option of studying over two years to complete the course, subject to your manager's approval, appropriate mentorship and placement provision.
This short course relates to all the NHS KSF core and selected specific health & wellbeing dimensions. Completion of the short course will assist you in the production of evidence against these dimensions. This will support the achievement of your personal & professional objectives identified at appraisal.

This module will provide practitioners with the ability to develop knowledge and skills in patient assessment, giving the opportunity to examine & explore common themes and concepts underpinning critical care and specialist practice. The module will provide students with the opportunity to think critically and logically about issues pertinent to assessment of the acutely, critically ill or deteriorating patient. The module encompasses shared learning across the critical and specialist care field. The module assessment comprises: An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), clinical competencies, and practice hours. |

This practice-based module will give the opportunity for practitioners to acquire and refine skills and knowledge in children’s high dependency practice by building upon skills and knowledge gained in pre-registration courses and post-qualifying experience. The module requires student to explore and challenge existing knowledge of care in practice, review research and policy, and explore physiological and psychological principles underpinning the needs of children requiring high dependency care. The module assessment comprises: A case study and a poster, clinical competencies, and practice hours. |
Your next step
Access to the Critical and Specialist Care short courses is open to practitioners who meet the following criteria. You must:
- Be a registered health or social care professional with a minimum of 12 months professional practice. Applicants will normally have been qualified as a registered nurse (Child) for at least 12 months.
- Have the support of the manager of your practice area.
- Have an identified mentor and opportunities to achieve the competencies in practice.
- Be able to produce evidence of the ability to study at your proposed level of entry if requested.
- Be successful in the selection process for this module/course (interview or other).
- Be employed or have access to a health care setting that will enable achievement of the learning outcomes.
