This module will provide practitioners with the ability to develop knowledge and skills in patient assessment, giving the opportunity to examine & explore common themes and concepts underpinning critical care and specialist practice. The module will provide students with the opportunity to think critically and logically about issues pertinent to assessment of the acutely, critically ill or deteriorating patient. The module encompasses shared learning across the critical and specialist care field.

The module assessment comprises:
An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), clinical competencies, and practice hours.
 
Principles of Neonatal Intensive Care Practice

Teaching is delivered in Oxford
This double practice module is designed to offer an in-depth analysis of the care of the critically ill neonate and support of the family. It provides practitioners with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and critical care skills of premature and sick neonates and support of their families. Learners draw upon knowledge gained in concurrent practice and the physiological and psychological principles underpinning practice to enhance care. A range of evidence is explored and critically analysed to determine implications for practice. Participants will develop learning through classroom dialogue and debate, challenging and reflecting on practice.
The module assessment comprises:
Clinical competencies and an essay.
 
Advances in Neonatal Intensive Care Practice

Semester 2
Alternate Wednesdays all day
150 hours of student effort incl.
30 hours university contact time
Teaching is delivered in Oxford
This single practice module is designed to enable practitioners to further develop their skills in caring for critically ill neonates and support of their families. Advances in neonatal intensive care will be explored and a range of evidence critically analysed to determine implications for practice. In addition students will have the opportunity to gain insight into the wider issues affecting the provision of neonatal intensive care. Participants will develop learning through classroom dialogue and debate, challenging and reflecting on practice.

The module assessment comprises:
Clinical competencies and a poster presentation.

The Neonatal Practice short course may be taken over a year. There is also the option of studying over two years to complete the course, subject to your Manager’s approval. For the two-year route, the Principles of Neonatal Intensive Care Practice module is taken in the first year of study with Introduction to Patient Assessment and Advances in Neonatal Intensive Care Practice in the second year of study.

Access to the Critical and Specialist Care short courses is open to practitioners who meet the following criteria. You must:

  • Be a registered health or social care professional with a minimum of 12 months professional practice.
  • Have the support of the manager of your practice area.
  • Be able to produce evidence of the ability to study at your proposed level of entry if requested.
  • Be successful in the selection process for this module/course (interview or other).
  • Be employed or have access to a health care setting that will enable achievement of the learning outcomes.
